About UsJewellery House is an independent company established in 1993 and is based in the coastal town of Aberystwyth in west Wales.
Welsh GoldIt is known that in Roman times Welsh gold was mined by hand from rock that lies in a band stretching from Barmouth, past Dolgellau and up towards Snowdonia. Welsh gold forms in seams like coal, so in early times it could easily be extracted from the rock. It can yelds up to 30 ounces per ton, differing from South African gold which forms as fragmented deposits within the rock yeildling just a quarter of a ounce for every ton mined. Gold jewellery like torc necklets and bangles were worn by early Welsh princes as a badge of rank and the tradition is echoed today with Welsh gold being used to make the wedding rings of a number of Royal brides. There were three gold mines in Wales but sadly today none of them is being worked or is producing gold. The last two mines to close were the Clogau and Gwynfyndd both of which closed during the early part of 1999. Happily for at least the next few years, we will still be able to offer the two ranges of jewellery which contain gold from these mines, making these rare and treasured pieces even more collectable.
* Clogau Gold Mine in Bontddu, near Barmouth in the Snowdonia mountains. For generations the Welsh Gold has been proud of its associations with the Royal Family. The wedding rings of The Queen, The Prince of Wales , Diana Princess of Wales, and Princess Margaret, were fashioned from Welsh Gold. The mine at Bontddu was opened as a copper mine in 1842 and gold was discovered by accident in 1854. Clogau St. David's Gold Mine has gone through mixed fortunes in the last century; the gold veins are very variable and difficult to locate, making this Welsh Gold extremely rare. |
